Family Commitment Sunday

As a church we want to do all we can to strengthen and support our families.  We want to share with you something new we are starting called Family Commitment Sunday.  Family Commitment Sunday is a time for the church and families to celebrate God’s gift of new children in a Sunday service. Family Commitment Sunday

During these Sundays we will address the parent’s commitment in raising and discipling their children to know and love God.  We will address the church family in their commitment to support and encourage families and we will celebrate together God’s gracious gift of children to the families and our church.  Family Commitment Sunday’s will be held twice per year.  They are open to families with any age children, adopted or natural born, where at least one parent is a member of Greentree.

Three things we want to accomplish:

1.Publicly celebrate new children in the life of our church

Children are a gracious gift from God. They are a blessing to celebrate and cherish. In bringing children forward we are publicly acknowledging God’s kindness to parents and our church body. We praise and thank God, asking him to save and use each child in a great way to advance the gospel and bring glory to His name.

2.Commission parents as primary disciple-makers of their children

Scripture commands parents to “raise your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Eph. 6:4 Parents are given the task to be primary disciple-makers in their children’s lives. Parents are commissioned in front of the church body, inviting their encouragement, prayer, and accountability as they publicly commit themselves to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

3.Commission the church family

Families need the church. Both the family and the church have been given the responsibility of discipling children. Parents need the encouragement, accountability and prayer of the church family in this task. Children need the church to teach them and live as an example of biblical faithfulness. Every member shares these responsibilities.

During a Family Commitment Sunday, we will celebrate the grace of children being born into or adopted into a Christian family without confusing that with the greater grace of being born again and adopted into God’s family of faith through believing the gospel message.  We want these Sundays to be a time when we celebrate new children, encourage our families, and a time when the church comes together to strengthen and support them.
