What We Believe

STATEMENT OF FAITH

Here at Greentree, our Statement of Faith focuses on those beliefs which distinguish us from an unbelieving world. We have not included beliefs which distinguish one believer from another. We believe it is important that the threshold of belief for membership in this local church be the same as it is to be a member of the body of Christ. We hold and teach doctrinal distinctions not included in this statement, but it is not necessary to hold these lesser distinctions in order to serve or be a member in this church.

THE BIBLE

The Bible, the sixty-six books of the Old & New Testaments, is the inspired Word of God without error in the original writings. It is the Christian’s sufficient and final authority for belief and conduct.

THE NATURE OF GOD

There is one God, existing eternally as three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit - each being the fullness of God: infinite and perfect in holiness, truth, power and love.

THE NATURE OF MAN

Man was created in the image of God to have fellowship with God, to reflect His glory, and to represent God’s rule over the Creation. In Adam, humanity rebelled against God. The result being that everyone is now by nature a sinner, and therefore, under God’s judgment.

THE NATURE AND WORK OF CHRIST

Jesus is the second person of the Trinity who assumed a human nature. He is one person with both a divine nature and a human nature. He is both fully God & fully man. He lived a sinless life. He died on the cross to pay for sins and then was bodily resurrected. He ascended to the right hand of the Father, and is now enthroned in glory interceding for all who are united to Him through faith.

SALVATION

Man is helpless to save himself from the penalty and power of sin. Salvation is a gift of God through faith in Jesus Christ’s perfect life, substitutionary death and resurrection; whereby, a Christian is reconciled to God and to all who by faith are members of His body, the church.

THE NATURE AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He applies the redemption purchased by Jesus’ perfect life and atoning death. The Spirit unites a person to Christ through faith by means of a spiritual birth, so that one can believe the truth of the gospel. The Spirit indwells every believer, empowering them for godly living & service.

THE CHURCH

The church consists of all those who have been united to Christ through faith. It is the body of Christ functioning under the headship of Christ. Each member of the body is called to be active in a local church. Each church is a local manifestation of His body with pastors called and equipped by God to teach and lead the church as His under-shepherds. Each member is gifted by the Spirit to serve in the body for the benefit of every member.

ordinances

Christ has established two ordinances for the Church:

Baptism - believers are baptized with water signifying their union with Christ & His church.

Lord’s Supper - believers celebrate a sacred meal of the New Covenant in Jesus’ body & blood.

END OF THE AGE

At a time known only to God Himself, Jesus Christ will return physically to this earth in power and glory to consummate history and establish the fullness of His kingdom over all creation. Both the living and the dead will stand before God for judgment. Unbelievers will be judged for their sins and cast into Hell. Believers will be judged on the merit of Christ and enter into the joy and perfection of their salvation.
